Chicano and Latino Communities have strong collaborative traditions of coming together when someone in our community needs help or support. We crowdsource money for funerals; we come together to support new parents with baby showers and we pitch in to celebrate our young women often with expensive quinceñeras.
What if we used the same collaborative spirit but translated them for updated context? In addition to throwing baby showers, what if we supported our young people who got into college by throwing them a College Shower and helped pitch in to get them all the supplies and resources they need to be successful in school? What if we had padrinos of the science books? Or a computer padrino? What if we helped our young people organize a College Reveal party (Like a gender reveal party for babies, but better!) to celebrate their choice in schools and to help them raise money to offset the costs of college? This is especially necessary for those seeking to get a Masters Degree, as they are often completely out of pocket. Even a Job Shower with Padrinos of the Suit to help our youth prepare for Jobs.
This Project aims to provide young people with the tools to organize these celebrations, honoring our collaborative traditions but adapting them to new contexts and struggles. This project aims to use our collaborative tradition of mutual aid and reciprocity and use it to help our Communities Celebrate Success and create new traditions that can be paid forward to continue cycles of success
